Seasonal Leaf Collection

This year leaf collection begins November 5, 2007 and ends January 12, 2008. DPW will mail a detailed leaf collection schedule brochure to District households in October.

Christmas trees will be collected from January 2 through January 31, 2008. Residents must place undecorated, bare holiday trees at the curb no earlier than Monday, January 2, 2008. These will be shredded into mulch for gardening. After January 31, please place these items out with your regular trash. Any trees not put out for collection that week should be placed with your trash on your regular collection day.

Helpful Tips

  • Track collection in your neighborhood
  • Locate your neighborhood* on the ward map.
  • Rake leaves into a pile in the tree box space. (Leaves in the street create travel and parking hazards.)
  • Put the pile(s) of leaves where DPW crews can easily vacuum them. Please avoid areas where there are parked cars or low-hanging trees.
  • Bagged leaves should weigh no more than 60 pounds each.
  • Do not park cars on top of a leaf pile -- it may ignite leaves.
  • Please be patient -- DPW will collect everything.

If residents hire a landscaper to remove leaves, or don't want to wait for the DPW schedule, residents may dispose leaves for free at the Fort Totten Transfer Station, located at 4900 Bates Road, NE, from 1 pm to 5 pm, Monday through Friday and 8 am to 3 pm on Saturday. Call (202) 576-6803 for more details or select the link below.

  • View directions to Fort Totten Transfer Station.
